12-Week Challenge Discussion Board > Welcome to Week No. 5!

Hello, all. I hope everyone's spirits are still high, despite our silence here last week when Joe was sick. This week, I thought we all could talk about fitness and healthy eating while traveling, something that I know I have trouble with.

First, what works for me.

1. Walk. Everywhere. Most trips require some sight seeing or shopping or basic exploring, so get yourself a map and don't take a car, bus or taxi unless the distance is over a mile or two.
2. Laps at the pool. A swimsuit is the only equipment you need.
3. Order special. When you have to eat out, don't be afraid to ask for special considerations, things like "no butter or oil on that chicken," "dressing on the side," "no cheese" or "can you box up half in advance?" Most hotel rooms have a mini fridge where you can keep the food for later.
4. Use your resources. Go on the web to look at restaurants' nutritional information, or use great books like "Eat this, not that."
5. Stay away from the indulgence attitude. It's easy to say, "but I'm on vacation." But come on, you'll have to get those pounds off when you come back. Consider it your vacation that all your hard work is not in vain.

How about you guys? Most of my travel is for vacation, but what about work trips? Have you ever taken work out equipment with you?

I'm so glad this topic came up- I just got back from a work trip from Chicago and am getting ready to go on vacation here in a few weeks. I feel like overall I did pretty well- I got some workouts in which is a big step for me. The thing I most struggled with is that indulgence attitude. That caused me a few slip-ups. It's really a struggle for me to avoid the temptations. Any tips or suggestions?
